Trader Mayne is a crypto trader, educator, and the co-founder of Breakout. He has been trading since 2013 and full time for the last seven-plus years. His style is simple price action, support, resistance, ranges, and liquidity sweeps, mostly on the higher timeframes.

From Losing It All to Building Breakout

Mayne's start was rocky. He first got into crypto around 2013, when Bitcoin ran from about $100 to $1,400. He made roughly $150,000 in his early twenties, felt unstoppable, quit his job, and walked away from his accounting career, only for the market to crash and wipe out everything, partly because he kept buying as it fell. He had to ask for his old job back, which humbled him fast.

That loss made him want to actually understand trading. He moved into forex around 2014 to 2015, learned price action, and traded with prop firms, then brought those same skills back to crypto when it heated up again in 2016 to 2017. Years later he lost millions in the FTX collapse and came back from that too. In 2023 he co-founded Breakout with a few friends from a group chat, built it into the first crypto-native prop firm, and Kraken acquired it in 2025.

How Mayne Trades

Mayne keeps his trading simple and rules-based. He trades mostly on the higher timeframes instead of chasing every small move, because he found that the better he got, the fewer trades he took. He reads market structure and trend, looks to get in early in the week (often trying to catch the weekly higher low on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday), and treats trading as a numbers game: he only needs to be right about a third of the time when he aims for a 2-to-1 reward-to-risk.

His key rules:

• Trade the higher timeframes so your strategy fits your life
• Set your stop loss and target, then let the trade hit one of them instead of closing early
• Risk a small, fixed percentage and think in reward-to-risk, not dollars
• Follow the system, since the money is a by-product of the process
• Take profits and turn paper gains into real money

He mostly trades crypto, with about 80% of his holdings in Bitcoin and Ethereum, and he trades forex and gold when crypto is quiet.

Beyond the Highlight Reel

Mayne is open that social media is just the highlight reel, the courtside seats and the watch are not the real day, which is long hours in the charts and on calls. He believes the hardest part of trading is not drawing lines on a chart, it is getting past the mental side, and he credits daily journaling, discipline, and strong self-talk for helping him push through.

He built Breakout because he believes the biggest problem in trading is not strategy, it is capital, and he wanted to give people who can trade a way to access real money without risking their own. He shares almost everything he does for free, because he had to learn most of it the hard and lonely way.
